Meeting the irrigation needs from 1965 to 2020
wiil require the development of about 4.5
miilion acres of new land, and supplying
sufficient water, resulting in a depletion of
about 10.4 million acre-feet annually.
2. About 1 million acres of new irrigated lands
wiil replace enterprises displaced by urban
development.
3. To meet the projected 2020 water needs for
irrigation wiil require augmentation of the
Colorado River and, if Pyramid and Walker
Lakes are maintained, the Great Basin Region.
4. Costs for development of water for irrigation
wiil be $7.4 billion to the year 2020. The
annual operation and maintenance costs for the
new irrigation development will increase from
$55 million in 1980 to $122 miilion in 2020.

o

GREAT 8ASIN
LOWER COLORADO
UPPER COLORADO
1965 1980 2000 2020

Figure I I.-Irrigation installation cost.

120

CIl 100
a:
<X
-'
-' 80
0
'"
"- 60
0
CIl
Z
0 40
-'
-'
:::E
20
GREAT BASIN
LOWER COLORADO
UPPER COLORADO
0
1965 1980 2000 2020

Figure 12.-Annual irrigation operation and mainte-
nance costs for facilities installed after
1965.

49
