002675

come projections. Population and employment pro.
jections are based on U.S. Census Series C conditions.
Historic trends in productivity were used to establish
income increases. ERS provided estimates of food
and fiber requirements for the projected population.
All projections were made for the years 1980, 2000,
and 2020. Estimates of both population and needs
for food and fiber (for domestic consumption and
export) were made for the Nation and then ap-
portioned to each of the regions. In making the
apportionment of food and fiber production, past
trends were extended to the year 1980. The appor-
tionment attained in 1980 was then assumed to
continue through 2020.

Economic Proiections

1968 OBERS PROJECTIONS

The 1968 OBERS projections are part of a
consistent set of national interregional projections
based upon historical relationships. In order to have
consistency among all of the framework studies in
progress in the Nation, the Water Resources Council
directed that 1968 OBERS projections provide the
basis for estimates of future needs. These projections
were prepared by the Office of Business Economics
(OBE) and the Economic Research Service (ERS);
hence OBERS.
OBE provided population, employment, and in-

Table 6.-Estimated 1965 population, employment, and personal income and 1968 GBERS projections

Year

1965

1980

2000

2020

Rewon Population Employment Personal Income
(In Thousands of P~sons) ($ in Millions)*
California 18,106 7,133 56,038
Great Basin 1,151 417 2,995
Lower Colorado 1,877 676 4,302
Upper Colorado 337 111 664
Pacific Southwest 21,471 8.337 *
California 25,465 10,423 121,162
Great Basin 1,536 588 6,309
Lower Colorado 2,644 1,017 10,547
Upper Colorado 384 139 ~
Pacific Southwest 30,029 12,167 *
California 38,181 15,654 300,904
Great Basin 2,266 891 16,337
Lower Colorado 4,263 1,679 30,158
Upper Colorado 485 183 2,070
Pacific Southwest 45,195 18,407 *
California 54,941 22,410 725,551
Great Basin 3,198 1,279 40,551
Lower Colorado 6,639 2,642 81,452
Upper Colorado -lli. ---1ll 6,874
Pacific Southwest 65,394 26,564 *

Source: Economic Appendixes of each region.

*Personal income in three regions is expressed in 1958 constant dollars. whereas in the Great Basin Region 1965 dollars were
used; consequently, the Pacific Southwest area totals are not appropriate.

35
