It originates in the rugged San Juan <br />Nountsins in Colorado, enters New Mexico nesr Rosa. and flows approXi.ma.tcly 90 miles <br />through tha sta.te before re-entoring Colora.do. <br /> <br />The Ha.vajo, Piedra, Pine and Anima.s Rivers a:ce the ma.in tributaries of the <br />San Juan River. The Anilll$s River was not included in this pt'oject since it enters <br />the San Jusn River below the Navsjo Oem. <br /> <br />As a rosult of. the Upper Colora.do River Storage program the Navajo 0,"Ull Wa.s <br />proposed for the San Juan River a.nd is now under construction, approxima.tely 14 <br />mi lea northeast of Blanco,. Now Mexico. The construction wi 11 be completed by Septam- <br />bnr 1962, however, water impoundment.will start during the spdng of 1962. <br /> <br />The purpose of this rehabilitation project was to eliminate the present tra.sh <br />fish populations in the San Juan River end tributa.ries upstream from the d8nl site. <br />Since the waters impoundod by the Navajo D.,m will extend into ColoradO, both states <br />",oopora.ted with this project. This report will include only the New Mexico pOl:"tiol1 <br />of the pt'oject. Our portion of the rehabilitation project included 15 miLns of the <br />Pi ne Ri.ver, 30 mUes of the San Juan River, and approximately six miles of the <br />Navajo Rivor. A total of .51 miles of wa.te1:"S wa.S treated. <br /> <br />When the project W;9S initia.tecl, tho possibility existed of having nM.riy <br />20,000 acre-feet of wa.ter impounded by the beginning of the rotenoning. This <br />po~sl.bj.bility could not be disregarded, the,'eforc, the initial planning included this <br />volun1o of we.ter a.S a. part of the project. <br /> <br />.1'ho rehs.bilita.lion project started September 7, 1961. There wa.s nO wa.ter im- <br />pounded at this timo, so one phaso of the project was eliminated. <br /> <br />1.e.\:lUl1.qulla: <br /> <br />1.iquid Noxfish with five percent active rotenone ingredients was used. Stream <br />flolJS wen> dotermined and the amount of rotenone requirnd wa.a calc.ulated. <br /> <br />Tho rotenone was applied S.t three different points along both tha San Juan a.nd <br />1'ine Rivers. The upper sta.tion on the Pino River was located at the Colorado-New <br />Mexico state line near La. Boca., Colorado.
