The Gunnison River with its tributaries offers some of the <br />finest stream fishing in the State, while Taylor Reservoir is a major attrac- <br />tion for the boat fisherman. The mountains around Ouray, nationally known <br />as the Switzerland OL America, offer incomparable scenery and wilderness for <br />the photographer and nature lover. From its mining heritage of the past, the <br />area has its share of famous mining camps, old ghost towns and abondoned rail. <br />road grades to intrigue the historian and amateur prospector. Large ntunbers <br />of big game animals, chiefly deer and elk, are found in the Basin. Many <br />productive fishing waters and areas of productive upland game habitat are <br />also found within the Basin. <br /> <br />Grand Mesa, with its many lakes and reservoirs, receives more than 100,000 <br />fishing visits during the seas<:ln. The Uncompahgre Plateau is one of the <br />most productive deer hunting areas in the State of Colorado. Recently there <br />has been increased development of winter sports facilities. The installa- <br />tion of a telecar gondola at Crested Butte gives promise of making this a <br />major winter sports area. <br /> <br />Land Status <br /> <br />About 72 percent of the land in the Gunnison River Basin is publicly owned. <br />The majority of these public lands are in Federal ownership. Table 2 shows <br />total acreage and percentage of the various land ownerships.
