Correction of the error will add approximately 29,000
acres to the Tentatively Suitable Timber Lands, There will be no
change in the Aliowable Sale Quantity, The error occurred
where ever these soil types occur on the Forest. Correction of
the error will be done by amending the Forest Plan. RON
PUGH, 719)852-5941, Su ervisor's Office.

Comments ayceptoo .
until March 15,
1998, .

WHAT'S HAPPENING WITH THE BONANZA CERCLA REMOVAL ACTION?

Map index number 7-21

Since 1991, the Forest Service has been actively working to get the Bonanza mining area of northern
Saguache County cleaned up, Though this is not a NEP A project, we are including the following to
keep you up-to-date on the progress of the clean-up work, For more information, call Ron JabIoll;ski,
spokesperson, at (719)852-5941.

This project, the environmental cleanup of portions of the Bonanza Mining District near Bonanza, ..
Colorado, is being oonducted under CERCLA, or the "Superfund" law (42 U,S,C, 9601 et seq,), and
public involvement IS being conducted consistent with the National Contingency Plan (40 CFR300 et.
seq.) On-the-groum! work started in the 1994 field season, To-date, actions have been voluntary, .and
privately funded an" conducted under Forest Service CERCLA authority and oversite, Where ap"
propriate, work has been integrated with activity on adjacent private1ands under Colorado Department
of Public Health and Environment authority, .

As ofJanuary, 1998:

CocomongoMillsite Unit - Wark proposal is expected from private parties for work to be per-
formed in summer, 1998. .

Superior Unit - All work at this unit has been completed except for rnonitoring. Grass planted
on the former tailings pond, and at the nearby soil (cover material) pit, did well in 1997.

Rawley 12 Unit - In-tunnel work currently on hold pending evaluation of options. Water quality
monitoring continue~. Rawley tunnel rehabilitation got to approximately 2500' following several
months of new tunne) construction to by-pass a major roof collapse at around 2350'. Following re-
encountering the maiP. Rawley 12 tunnel, crews explored the "Clark vein workings" which tie into the
main Rawley 12 tun~el at about 2700'; unfortunately, these workings are in extremely poor condition
and were described as "impassible, " "everything collapsed," and our "worst nightmare,"

::j

y.

Other - Expect work to continue on both federal and private lands to stabilize tailings adjacent
to Kerber Creek in the 1998 field season,

~-~I!
