DWCD BOARD RESPONDS TO SUIT

In responding to what was
felt to be a "frivolous"
lawsui t the DWCD Board stated
that "these irresponsible
claims could irreparably
delay a project that is desired
by the vast maj ori ty of landowners
in the Proj ect area who feel
that the Dolores water storage
and delivery project is the
major hope for the economic
survival of the area." Board
President Bruce McAfee stated,
"It is a shame that a small
group of people have chosen
to inflict such damage on
our community. I believe
the final outcome of the
lawsuit will demonstrate
that the past and present
actions of the Board of Directors
of the Dolores Water Conservancy
District have always been
in compliance with the law
and in the best interest
of our fellow citizens."

OBJECTORS CAUSE DELAY IN
CONSTRUCTION

Construction funds for the
Dolores Project for FY 88
have been cut from $22 million
to $11.2. It is apparent
tha t the red uc tion is partly
because of the controversy
on the part of some "full
service" farmers who now
say they do not want their
water.

MANY FARMERS CONCERNED BECAUSE
OF THE DELA Y

The DWCD Manager's Office
reported that concern is
beginning to build from the
"silent majority" of farmers
who are planning to irrigate
and "want their water sooner
rather than later". They

~-

~

are becoming extremely concerned
with the consequences of
construction delays caused
by budget cuts. Therefore,
it is apparent that the majority
of the farmers who do want
their water are going to
have to "stand up and be
counted" to assure full funding
for FY 89, especially in
light of the lawsuit.

WATBR STARTS TO RUB

Pinion Farms, managed by
Hody Ewing, and Arthur Wilson
& Sons, Mark & Tim were the
first landowners to receive
pressurized project water.
This was a result of the
beginning of testing of the
six five hundred horsepower
pumps at the Fairview Pump
Plant.
Testing has been satisfactory
to the point that water became
available on a 24 hour per
day 7 day a week basis June
23rd. With the exception
of a few interruptions it
has since been continuous.

DWCD LAUDS BOR & KNC

In a recent letter to both
the Bureau of Reclamation
and KNC Construction Co.,
DWCD Assistant Manager Lou
George, complimented and
expressed gratitude to both
entities for their actions
"above and beyond the call
of duty" to deliver water
to the farmers, while the
system was going through
its initial tests. To do
this required all of the
test personnel, including
the DWCD staff to put in
some long hours of overtime.
