THE SLUMGULLION EARTHFLOW

INTRODUCTION

The year is approximately 1270 A.D. The place is a wind-swept mesa

on the western edge of Cannibal Plateau. SUddenly the water-saturated

clay and earth material give way and thousands of tons of earth begin to

move down the mountain and into the valley below. A few moments pass.....

............all is quiet once again. Several days pass and a lake forms

behind the natural dam of earthflow debris that has blocked the flow of the

river in the valley.

Today Lake San Cristobal stands as a dramatic witness of the past,

a sentinel of the Slumgullion earthflow.

Ori~in 2! ~ ~ Sl~ullion

In 1874, F. M. Endlich, a geologist employed by.the Hayden Survey,

noted the earthflow at the northern end of Lake San Cristobal and referred

to it as the Slumgullion mudflow, The term slu~ullion probably was derived

1

~
~
~
~
U)
~
