<br />16 <br /> <br />FOOT TRAIL TO THE ACTIVE FLOW FROM <br /> <br />PENNESON PARK <br /> <br /> <br />o <br />o <br />o <br />....:J <br /> <br />You can walk to the Slumgullion earthflow in about <br /> <br /> <br />following a trail from penneson Park northward (Plate I). <br /> <br /> <br />of the trail is on a lobe of the old original <br /> <br />,.- <br />--' <br /> <br />en <br /> <br />flow that blocked this valley. The older flow <br /> <br />is easily recognized by the mature trees that <br /> <br /> <br />are growing straight and normally. At the <br /> <br /> <br />end of the trail you will be standing on a <br /> <br /> <br />(part of the older flow) and will be able to <br /> <br />~ <br /> <br />~ <br />.. <br /> <br />"rl ...._ <br /> <br />see, just to the north, the younger flow. <br /> <br />The younger flow is recognized by the lack of mature vegetation <br /> <br />other than small grasses and bushes. The trees that are growing on this <br /> <br /> <br />part of the flow are commonly stunted and grow crookedly. The evergreens <br /> <br />on the active flow are Englemann spruce. These trees are associated with <br /> <br />small deciduous aspens that tend to grow in small clumps. <br /> <br />The younger flow has superimposed on its surface many compression <br />
