<br />\ <br /> <br />)' <br />(~ '.r,. <br />;', . <br /> <br />e...'..... <br />. ..... <br />. ,,~ <br /> <br />Edi torial <br /> <br />,_. <br />v-- <br />0-- <br /> <br />Here is a sampling of recent edilOrials from Colora~o <br />newsp3pers. <br />By The Associated Press <br /> <br />On the fight against exporting <br /> <br />water from the San Luis Valley: <br /> <br />There was good news iltlO:.n recently when Colorado <br />Altorney General Ken Sal<lzar ;mnounced hisoftice would <br />fight any effon to expon water from the San Luis Valley. <br />Salazar was, of course, referring to the atlcmpted wat. <br />grab by Baca Ranch owner Gary Boyce's Stockman's <br />Water Co. to pump billions of gallons ofwUler and pipe it <br />10 Ihe high bidders, be they in the nonhern Front or, as <br />many suspect, ultimately in Las Vegas or California. <br />,,' Boyce is being backed by a group or California venture <br />capitalists. <br />What raises the possibility he might try 10 export the <br />water westward was the fact that officials in New Mexico <br />had alerted the attorney general ~bout Stockman's interest <br />in selling: water there. <br />Salazar says this would make it possible through w3ter <br />exchanges between the Rio Grande and the San Juan River <br />that cou\d pro\l)de extra water along the ColQrado. to wit <br />for Las Vegas or Southern California. <br />He has heard reportS that Boyce may tile an application <br />in Alamosa Water Court after the Legislalure adjo'urns, <br />Such an application would have to delail where Stockman' <br />would selllhe water. <br />In the past two years, Boyce announced plans to seek <br />permission 10 pump Ul least 100.000 acre-feet of water <br />from Ihe deep aquifer below his ranch. He did not carry <br />through. . <br />But it appears Boyce is not done with trying to execute <br />his scheme. Wnter is a valuable resource in the Southwest; . <br />one that fetches a high price. . .. <br />Anorney General Salazar has tired the tirst salvo; warn- . <br />ing Stockman's that the cost of even attempting such a sale <br />will be high. indeed, <br />And il is a battle wonh Colorado's efforts. With water, <br />the San Luis Valley can prosper.
