III. SAND CREEK BASIN

23. PROBLEM CONSIDERATION

a. Flood problem. Prior to World War II, dam~e areas in
the Sand Creek basin were primarily limited to WesterlY Creek and
other minor Sand Creek tributaries. Roads, bridges, and crops
along Sand Creek sUlltained minor flood dBmages. The con-
struction of military facilities at Buckley Field, Fitzsimons
General Hospital, Lowry Air Force Base, and the Rocky Mountain
Arsenal, led to the expansion of the Denver metropolitan area
into the Sand Creek basin. Since World War II, urban expan-
sion has caused development of portions of the Sand Creek
flood plain downstream trom Buckley Field.

"R" Jan 72

46

.
..

3079
