Water Project <br />~ndangered by Fish <br /> <br />GLENWOOD SPRINGS (A?) - The squaw fish, a <br />large bottom feeder once abundant in the Colorado <br />River and its tributaries and now an endangered <br />species, could block construction of a proposed $50 mil- <br />lion water-storage a,nd hydr~electric project on Colo- <br />rado's Westem Slope, <br />At Isslle is construction of the Colorado River Water <br />Conservation District's proposed JuniDer Cross Moun. <br />tain ro'ec, which would store up to one -million acre- <br />eet of water in two reservoirs on the Yampa and Little <br />Snake rivers near Craig, . <br />'The Yampa, however, has been identified as a prime <br />habitat of the sauaw fish. Before construction can begin, <br />the federal Bureau of Reclamation must issue a permit <br />. allowing the district to flood 13,000 acreS behind the <br />proposed Juniper Dam on the Yampa. <br />The directors of the river district Tuesday gave Iheir <br />attorney preliminary approval to file suit in federal <br />court if problems develop in securing that permit. <br />Such a suit, they said, would challenge the procedures <br />by which plant and animal habitats are protected under <br />. the Interior Department endangered species program. <br /> <br />,j <br /> <br />1)1 <br /> <br />I <br />Ii' <br />
