<br />III. SOCIAL <br /> <br />Th~~~ ar~ :S~ lan~o~~ers a~d 100 farms in the Wel1ton-~ohawk area. They are <br />close-knit an~ h~\'~ traditional social values. Most of their ancestors <br />settled here two or t~ree generations ago. Farming is not only a business but <br />a way of life. <br /> <br />People work together for common goals. For example, rodeos and auctions, <br />support medical facilities and ambulance services. Businesses strongly <br />support these activities. There are social and agricultural clubs. Children <br />seem to be a focal point. <br /> <br />Farmers have progressive attitudes toward adopting new aanage_ent practices <br />aDd technologies such as laser leveling, large irrigation turnout structures, <br />soil swapping and water .easuring. <br /> <br />The 75 percent cost sharing provision resulted in a timely application of the <br />prosra~. <br /> <br />A local television progrsm and newsletters were used to describe the latest ,in <br />project developments. These were important but the word-of-mouth probaoly was <br />more effective in spreading the news. Installed conservation practices <br />denonstrated positive impacts which were observed locally. <br /> <br />A high degree of political awareness was another factor that led to almost <br />total involvement.
