ARCHAEOLOGICAL, HISTORICAL, AND PALEONTOLOGICAL RESOURCES

~
~
~
~

1. Question - How many archaeological and historical sites have been
found in the area?

Answer

- There are a total of 53 sites in both states. An addi-
tional 12,000 acres of full service land in Colorado is
to be surveyed this summer.

2. Question - What are the impacts on the sites?

Answer

Specific impacts cannot be assessed in all cases until
detailed construction plans are completed, There are
10 sites in the reservoir basins; these would be excavated
or studied further before inundation. The 14 sites along
canal alignments would be avoided by slight realignment of
the canals in most cases, and excavated or studied where
avoidance could not be achieved, One site in full service
land would be excavated if it is determined the agricul-
tural activity would affect the site.

Twenty-eight sites were described as not significant for
further study by the professionals who surveyed the area,
These sites mayor may not be affected by project features,
but no further study would be made.

Sites located during the summer survey and during con-
struction activities would be evaluated by a competent
professional and impacts would be mitigated in the manner
described_~bove.

3. Question - Why has the entire project area not been assessed for
these resources as required by Section 106 of the National
Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and Executive Order
l1593?

Answer

- The contractor making the survey experienced unforeseen
problems in the field and was not able to complete the
entire area. Another contract will be let for the corning
field season. Upon completion of all surveys a full list
of sites eligible for nomination will be submitted for
inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places,
The State Historic Preservation Officers in both states
have concurred with this plan.
