OOZM 1

CIL'Il'TER III

PROJFCT DEVELOPME~n'
(Juniper unit)

.

including 29,400 acre-feet of active capacity and 7,700 acre-feet of
dead storage. The reservoir would have a normal water surface eleva-
tion of 5,880 feet and a dead storage elevation of 5,836 feet. Artesia
Dam would be of rolled earth-fill construction. It would rise 108 feet
above the drainage channel and would extend 6,670 feet in length at the
crest. The outlet Workll with a capacity of 115 second-feet would be
located on the west or upstream side of the reservoir. The outlet works
would have a total length of 4,390 feet and would consist of an entrance
channel, a pressure tunnel, a gate chamber with an access shaft and con-
trol gates, and a free-flow tunnel. Spillway works would not be required
for the reservoir.

Artesia Canal

Artesia Canal, heading at the end of the outlet tunnel from the
Artesia Regulating Reservoir, would vary in capacity from 115 to 50
second-feet. It would be 8.8 miles long and would consist mostly of
unlined earth section.

.

Worisits Canal

The vlonsits Canal would head at an elevation of 4,850 feet on an
unnamed channel that drains most of the unit lands on Deadman Bench.
The canal would have an initial capacity of 110 second-feet and a ter-
minal capacity of 10 second-feet. It would be 14.3 miles long and
would consist mostly of unlined earth section.

Savannah Butte Canal

Savannah Butte Canal would vary in capacity from 45 to 10 second-
feet and would be about 15.3 miles in length. It would consist almost
entirely of unlined earth section. The diversion dam at the head of
the canal on the White River would be a concrete weir.

Laterals and Drains

Costs of laterals and drains were estimated from general data on
cost5 per acre for serving similar land5 on other projects. The drains
are expected to be 5hort, open structures leading to nearby natural
water courses.

Construction Considerations

.

No serious geological prOblems are expected to be encountered in
construction of the unit dams and canals. The works could be con5tructed
in a period of about 4 years. It would be preferab:l.e, however, for
the construction of t.he \'ionsit.s and Savannah Butte C~nals to be de-
layed until the pattern and quality of return flow from Deadman Bench

44
