The dam forming the reservoir could be a rolled <br />earth-fill structure or an arch-type concrete structure as the dam site <br />is suitable for either type. The cost estimate Was made for the earth- <br />fill type with the dam crest 105 feet in hei~ht above streambed and 10 <br />feet above the normal water surface elevation. At that height the dwn <br />would have a crest length of 255 feet, The outlet_~o~ks, with a capacity <br />of 150 second-feet, would be a concrete-lined conduit, A spillway with <br />a capacity of 1),000 second-feet would be provided. <br /> <br />Wessels Canal <br /> <br />Wessels Canal would have an initial capacity of 120 second-feet and <br />a terminal capacity of 10 second-feet. It would be 4;.8.7 ndlel! in length, <br />The canal would consist primarily of unlined earth section but would <br />include 2-IDiles of lined section near its head; - 'a siphon across Oalc <br />Creel., a;;d 1.4 miles'- of bench fiume and lined secti-ons 0 D the ste'ep 'hill- <br />sides across the Yampa River from- Steamboat Springs. The diversion dam <br />at the head of the canal would be an overflow concrete weir structure. <br /> <br />Laterals and Drains <br /> <br />. Costs of laterals and drains were estimated from general data on <br />costs per acre for serving similar lands of other projects. The drains <br />are expected to be short open structures leading to nearby natural water <br />courses. <br /> <br />Construction Considerations <br /> <br />,No geological problems are apparent that would seriously hamper the <br />construction of Bear DaIll. The dam site is located in a narrow gorge of <br />the Yarapa River and is cut in crystalline rock. The Wessels Canal is not <br />expected to present any construction problems except for the section of <br />canal near SteBInboat Springs. This section would lie across steep slopes <br />and in unstable soils and would require Bome special design and construc- <br />. tion work, <br /> <br />A construction period of about 2 years would be required for the <br />unit with the work limited, because of climatic conditions, to the <br />period from April through November. No construction camp would be <br />required as housing facilities would be available in nearby communities. <br /> <br />Cost estimates <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />The construction cost of the Wessels unit is estimated at $?,488,OOP. <br />or $390 for each acre of full irrigation service land or equivalent, Its <br />annual operation, maintenance, and replacement costs are expected to <br />amount to $12,700.
