.

.

.

002-3 n ~

Ci~'\PrER I

GENERAL DISCUSSIONS

~lunicipal water supplies

Communities in the Yompa-I'1hite project area obtain domestic water
from nearby streams or sprin.3S. For the most part, their supplies are of
satisfactory quality and are of ample quantity for present populations.

Power development

Electric energy for the project area is supplied by public and pri~
vate systens. The [;eneratin(; plants in the area have a total installed
capacity of 10,050 kilowatts. The largest system in the area is the Yanq:>a
Valley Electric Association with 5,250 kilowatts of steam capacity and a
44-1dlovolt transI:1ission line from Steamboat Springs to Craig, Colo. The
lfuite River Electric Association bas a 1,000-kilowatt diesel plant at
Meeker, Colo., and the Noon Lake Electric Association has a 2,OOO-kilo\i!l.tt
stear.\ plant at Rangely, Colo. The large::;t industrial generating plant in
the area is an 1,8oo-kilowatt steam plant of the Colorado-Utah Coal Company
at I,fount !iarris, Colo.

T:1e systerr.s of the Yampa Valley and lfui te Hi vel' Electric Associations
are inter~onnected with the trans:n1ssion facilities of the iltcreau of Recla-
mati0n's Colorado-Dig Thompson project at Oak Creek, Colo. Interconnection
is made by means of a recently constructed G9-kilovolt line from Craig to
I.reeker.

The requirements for electric energy are constantly expanding. The
increased demands to date have been met by the interconnection with the
Dureau system.

Transportation facilities

The project area is served by one transcontinental hiGhway, U. s. 40,
and several State hi@ways and cO\ll1ty roads. The railroad connections
include a branch line from the Denver and Rio Grande llestern Railroad that
enters the project area near Toponas, Colo., and folIous along the Yampa
TIiver to its tenninus at Craig.

Local Industry

Agriculture is the principal industry of the project area, with live-
stock enterprises accountinc; 1'01' about half of the 1'arms. Coal mining and
the production of petroleum and natural ges are close to agriculture in
industrial importance. Lumbering contributes signif'icantly to the area.' s
economy and, because of the local climate and scenery, the tourist trade
has also become an important industry.

6
