.

n-r"'o5
uHd':")Ol .

.

-,

PART L SUMMARY

.

The Animas River drains a 1,100 square mile area in Southwestern Colorado

and discharges into the San Juan River 20 miles south of the Colorado-New

Mexico state line at Farmington. The general location of the Animas River

is shown on Figure 1. The river flows from north to south with its headwaters

in the San Juan Mountains. Elevations within the basin vary from over 13,000

feet along the Continental Divide to 6,000 feet at the state line. Annual precipi-

tation varies from 60 inches per year in the mountains to about 12 inches at

the lower elevations.

.

.

The Florida River is a major tributary of the Animas River, and much

of the irrigation water supply within the Animas basin in Colorado is diverted

from the Florida River. Information concerning the hydrology of the Florida

River is presented in a separate report enclosed herein.

.

.

The Animas River in Colorado, excluding the Florida River, provides a
water supply for irrigation of about 7,700 acres. Most of the itTigated area
is located in a narrow strip near the alluvial flood plain of the river. An ample
water supply is generally available for irrigation. Some regulation of Animas
River flows is provided through operation of Electra Lake for generation of
hydroelectric power.

.

Gaging station records are available for several sites along the Animas

River, providing extensive information concerning the historic river flows at

Durango and at a location near the state line. The virgin flow of the river was

calculated to be equal to the historic flow, corrected for reservoir operations,

irrigation diversions and return flows, and municipal water use in Durango. His-

toric flows of the Animas River at the gaging station near the state line, exclud-

ing flow contributions by the Florida River, have averaged 574,000 acre-feet

per year. The virgin flow was estimated to average 586,000 acre-feet per year,

reflecting an historic river depletion of 12,000 acre-feet associated with human

.

.

-1-

.
