Diversions for the period of 1951 through

1970 were assumed to be roughly proportional to census population figures.

A summary of population and estimated diversions from the Florida River is

provided below:

Florida
River
Year Population Diversion
(acre-feet) (acre-feet)
1950 7,459 3,700
1955 4,310
1960 10,530 5,050
1965 4,660
1970 10,333 4,730
1975 4,700
1980 11,426 4,630

Animas
River
Diversion

400
350
500
600

A listing of estimated diversions from the Florida River by Durango is presented
in Table 12.

Consumptive use of water for in-house use in Durango was estimated

to be five percent. Consumptive use of water related to lawn irrigation was

estimated to be 75 percent, with ten percent returning as immediate surface

or groundwater returns and an additional 15 percent returning on a lagged basis

through groundwater flow. Overall consumptive use of water associated with

municipal water use was estimated to be 26 percent. Although there is some

variation from year to year in the amount of water applied to lawn irrigation

in Durango, such variations are too small to be considered within the accuracy

of the Animas River hydrologic analysis.

-16-

ii.
