The paper describes the steps being taken to <br /> <br />inprove and ~odernize the system. <br /> <br />DISTRICT HISTORY <br /> <br />The Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation District, <br /> <br />Holdrege, Nebraska, was formed and chartered on July 24, <br /> <br />1933, under the 1a.....s of the State of Nebraska. The initial <br /> <br />construction costs of the District were nearly $43.6 million <br /> <br />financed by a $24.2 nillion loan fron the Federal Governnent <br /> <br />and a $19.4 million drought and depression PWA Relief Grant. <br /> <br />The first construction contract was issued in January 1936, <br /> <br />and the final original construction contract was conpleted <br /> <br />by September 1946. <br /> <br />The District operates two separate divisions: The Stearn <br /> <br />Division, which includes the Canaday stearnplant, and the <br /> <br />Hydro-Irrigation Division, \o,'hich includes all storage, <br /> <br />conveyance, hydroelectric, and irrigation facilities. <br /> <br />The Hydro-Irrigation Division facilities (Figure 1) consist <br /> <br />of Lake McConaughy, Kingsley Da~, North Platte Diversion <br /> <br />Darn, Supply Canal, Jeffrey Power Plant, Johnson Lake, and <br /> <br />Johnson No. 1 and 2 Power Plants. Three irrigation systems, <br /> <br />the Phelps, E6S, and E67, serve the principal irrigated <br /> <br />area. <br /> <br />-2- <br />
