ENVIRONMENTAL ASPECTS

The following information is taken from the final supplement to the Final

Environmental Statement filed in 1982 and modified herein for clarification by

statements enclosed in brackets [ ].

In the 1979 FES, lands within project boundary including the 13,800-acre
Mishak NWR totaled 138,500 acres. About 8,500 acres of the Mishak NWR lands
were outside Stages 1-5. With the revised mitigation plan, these 8,500 acres
will not be required; thus, the total lands within the project boundary are
reduced to 130,000 acres. The remaining 5,300 acres of the Mishak NWR were

included in Stage 5 and were to be acquired in fee title. Under the revised

mitigation plan, these lands will not be acquired but will remain within Stage 5

and the total project boundary.

The cI1annel will be fenced to prevent 1 ivestock from entering the channel.

As designed, the conveyance channel will cross 3.1 miles of the Alamosa NWR,

intersecting the existing Chicago and Mum ditches, two smaller lateral canals,

and one road. The ditches and canals pass under the conveyance channel in

siphon structures, and the channel siphons under an existing road.

The channel will not be modified to improve fish habitat; however, it may

be stocked by the Colorado DOW as a put-grow-and-take fishery. A maximum of 10

fishing access points will be provided.

[Artificial nesting platforms for raptors along the conveyance channel have

been established.]

A total of 1,107 acre-feet of artesian water

t. ..... _~. ~ - ,
\..i \.. ~.'iv~
rights will annually be

required for mitigation of project effects. The points of use of the acquired

water rights will be transferred to the Alamosa NWR and Blanca WHA. About 800

29
