APPENDIX D

Glossary Terms

Confined ground water aquifer - Artesian aquifer or as used herein defined as
the first significant aquifer zone below the confining clay layer.

Confining "Blue Clay" layer - Persistent blueish color clay layer that separates
the unconfined aquifer from the confined aquifer.

Constant head orifice turnout - A structure designed to regulate and measure the
flow 0 f wa te r .

Credit water - Water belonging to some identified agency stored in San Luis Lake
for future use.

Drawdown - A lowering of the aquifer water level.

Evapotranspiration - Loss of water from the soil both by evaporation and by
transpiration from the plants growing thereon.

"EW" well s - Permanent observation well s constructed to moni tor the effects of
the project on the confined and unconfined aquifers.

Gamma-ray logs - A graph relating depth to intensity of natural radiation espe-
cially valuable in detecting clays and other material of high radiation.

Ground water model - A mathematical model used to simulate conditions within the
aquifer area of interest.

Hydrologic divide - A complete or partial separation of the hydrologic con-
ditions of one area from those of another area.

Ions - An atom or group of atoms that carries a positive or negative electric
charge.

Mix model - A computer model used to determine the proper mix of water from
wells of differing quality to produce water of acceptable quality for delivery
from the project.

Observation wells - Wells used to monitor the unconfined aquifer water level and
the piezometric head of the artesian aquifer.

Operating Committee - A committee established by the authorizing project
legislation whose responsibility is to insure that the project is operated
within the requirements of the legislation.

Parshall flume - A specially shaped open channel flow section constructed for
the purpose of measuri ng the rate of fl ow of water.

r "'''~ ~ .
.'
