the past several years. Observation wells established during construction of

the Closed Basin Division within and adjacent to the project boundary will be

monitored by the PMSC system. Eighty-two "EW" wells will be monitored. The

PMSC system will monitor on a daily basis 81 of these wells and one artesian

well will be monitored monthly by manual measurement. Of the 82 "EW" wells, 15

monitor the unconfined aquifer only, 15 monitor tIle confined aquifer only, and

52 monitor both aquifers. The PMSC system utilizes sensors placed in the wells

to monitor water levels. Information obtained by the PMSC system will be stored

in the computer system and used on a regular basis for evaluation of the

drawdown at the project boundary and the affect on the confined aquifer.

The basis of the project requires that the ground water table be

drawn below the root zone of some species of terrestrial vegetation which has

been estimated to be approximately 13 feet below ground level. Higher yields

are anticipated during this phase of pumping as the unconfined aquifer will be

mined. Once this phase is accomplished, project personnel will attempt to

establish within the production objectives a withdrawal which will remove an

amount of water less than or equal to, but not in excess of, that which would

ordinarily be lost due to evapotranspiration. During all phases of pumping,

both aquifers will be monitored and these data will be used to help determine

any influences at the project boundary or in the confined aquifer resulting from

project pumping.

r' "", .., .. This may then allow for an eva-

luation of project effects at the boundary and within the confined aquifer.

18
