The Amity Mutua/Irrigation Company

1499

Superintendent' 5 Report
To
The Amity Mutua/ Irrigation Company

TO THE DffiECTORS AND STOCKHOLDERS:

Gentlemen:

The following statements covering the operation and maintenance of
The Amity Mutual Irrigation Company, its canals and reservoir s,rstem, are
submitted for your consideration.

AMITY CANAL

1968 was another good water year under the Amity. Only about 43,-
000 acre feet of water was stored in John Martin Dam on Aprill, but
timely rains, good river flow, and some 23,000 acre feet diverted from the
Great Plains Reservoirs [airly well satisfied demands.

Spring delivery was begun on April 1. Storage was exhausted in John
Martin Reservoir on April 21. Great Plains Reservoir water was all that
was run until May 27, when snow water began to reach the Amity. On May
31, a heavy rain in the Big Bend area taxed this canal to the limit. All
spillways overflowed but no breaks in the bankoccured. River"Clow continued
to be available to the Amity until Sept. 16, though the now was at times very
erratic. From September 16 until the end ci October only Great Plains
water was available.

The widening and re-aligning of the canal!n the Lamar area has been
continued. This work can only be done during the winter months when no
water is being diverted. We can average aoout 1 mile per month. Over
150,000 cu. yd. oC dirt and nearly 2,000 trees have been removed in this
area.

The several spillways on the Amity near Horse Creek were paved
with rock to prevent wa5hi~ during periods of high water.

Bogs and curves were cleaned along the entire canal as usual. Willows
were sprayed. The small patches of Johnson Grass were also sprayed.
This spray is expensive and does llttle good unless all Johnson GrasB in the
area is treated.

Page 17
