, ,

j'f)
.

E67 System. Lateral E61 Canal is the latest addition to the

District's irrigation system. having been co~pleted in the

spring of 1954. It is 15 km in length and has 26 km of

distribution laterals carrying water to about 2380 ha in

Gosper County.

THE NEW FOR HlPROVEMENTS

Though the CNPPID facilities are conparable to others in the

region. the District became concerned about its ability to

provide water when and where needed. increased operational

costs, and drainage proble~s. In addition. increasing fuel

costs were making present and future power generation more

expensive. Beginning in about 1970. the District began a

series of actions intended to modernize their irrigation

facilities and bolster the electric facilities.

Irrigation Facilities. One of the major problems experi-

enced by the District was the lack of adequate peaking

capacity, due partially to a one crop econo~y (90 percent

corn). ~hen the systems were designed in the late 1930's,

the goal was to prevent crop failures during periods of

drought by providing only supplementary water. However, the

farm operator must now maximize crop production every year.

For example. much of the present system was being operated

to supply about 3.8 mm/day for the predominant corn crop.

The optimum peak der.land is about 7 mm/day.
