t: tl a 'J ~ 5" .. ....-

implemented with the total costs expected to exceed
$50 million. The paper describes the steps being taken to
improve and modernize the system.

DISTRICT HISTORY

The Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation District,

Holdrege, Nebraska, was formed and chartered on July 24,

1933, under the laws of the State of Nebraska. The initial

construction costs of the District were nearly $43.6 million

financed by a $24.2 million loan from the Federal Government

and a $19.4 million drought and depression PWA Relief Grant.

The first construction contract was issued in January 1936,

and the final original construction contract was completed

by September 1946.

The District operates two separate divisions: The Steam

Division, which includes the Canaday steamplant, and the

Hydro-Irrigation Division, which includes all storage,

conveyance, hydroelectric, and irrigation facilities.

The Hydro-Irrigation Division facilities (Figure 1) consist

of Lake McConaughy, Kingsley Dam, North Platte Diversion

Dam, Supply Canal, Jeffrey Power Plant, Johnson Lake, and

Johnson No. 1 and 2 Power Plants. Three irrigation systems,

the Phelps, E65, and E67, serve the principal irrigated
area.

,

-2-
