In these
States, and in the other States in the Missouri Basin also, measurements of
the water level in observation wells were made in project areas where field
studies previously had been completed. The writing and review of field drafts
of reports on completed field studies was continued.

MONTANA
The detailed study of the terrace lands above the Two Medicine irrigation
canal in Glacier-County, begun this qUarter, consisted of locating and mapping
the bedrock surface on which the terrace gravels rest. The position of the
gravel-bedrock contact was determined by excavating pits and by auguring test
holes.

The study of irrigated and irrigable lands in the lower Bighorn River
valley was continued. All wells on lands proposed for irrigation after the
Yellowtail Dam is built were inventoried, also some wells on the bottomlands
that now are irrigated.

The surface geology of northeastern Blaine County was mapped by
reconnaissance me.thods. Almost all nlls in the area were examined and
pertinent data were recorded. The water-yielding capacity of the Flaxville
gravel underlying the IJogeland..Turner upland plain is being studied.

WYOMING
Field studies in the Greybull Valley-Emblem Bench-YO Bench area (Park
and Big Horn Counties) were completed. A report on the investigation is
being written.

COLORADO
Field studies in the upper South Platte River valley between Denver
and Hardin included the examination of about 150 wells and the recording of
information about them, the monthly measurement of water levels in 32
observation wells, the collection from ~rells and streams of 45 ~1ater samples
for chemical analysis, and the reconnaissance mapping of Boxelder Creek
valley, Beebe Draw, and the South Platte River valley between Brighton and
J Kersey.

SOtml DAKOTA
The field draft of a report on the investigation of the "Lake Dakota
plain" area ~1aS completed and was given a preliminary review. In addition
to the periodic water-level measU1'ements made in 199 wells in that area,
8 water..level recording gages, 2 rain recording gages, and 2 recording
barometers were maintained in operation.
