<br />Cultivation in the Northern Colorado Water Conservancy District,
<br />as practiced under 1rr4;ation, was started when the early pioneers
<br />diverted water by gravity from the mountain streams and watered
<br />fertile valley ~ands in the upper South Platte. Basin. From this
<br />irrigated land, food and livestock feed were produced for the untold
<br />number of fortune seekers attracted to the area because of the
<br />mining bonanza. The success of these ear~y agricultural enter-
<br />prises attracted man;y home seekers during the latter half of the
<br />~9th century. These settlers, in turn, initiated deve~opment of
<br />one of the most extensively 1rr;tgated areas in the entire West.
<br />Irrigation facilities constructed by farmer-ovned mutual irrigation
<br />companies in the Northern Co~orado Water Conservancy District con-
<br />sist of approx1lnate~y ~20 irrigation systems and 60 principal stor-
<br />age reservoirs. These systems serve an area from which about
<br />63~,OOO acres of crops valued at $45 million were harvested in ~949.
<br />Major crops produced by irrigation are alfalfa, grain crops, sugar
<br />beets, potatoes, and miscellaneous vegetab~es.
