Alva B. Adams Tunnel

Alva B. Adams Tunnel (1940-1946) transports water received
from the upper Colorado River watershed on the Western Slope under
the Continental Divide to the South Platte River Basin on the
Eastern Slope. From the west portal at Grand Lake" 'the tunnel
extends east 13.07 miles to a point on Wind River'about 5.5 miles
southwest of Estes Park. By highway, the distance from the west
portal to the east portal is nearly 50 miles. Actual ,diversions
through the tunnel began on Jun~' 23, 1947, with aooropriate dedica-
tion ceremonies at the east portal. The excavation and lining of
the tunnel, together with miscellaneous construction including
appurtenant control structures and acce~s roads at the portals,
was completed, under two principal contracts by the S. S. Magoffin
Company and Stiers Brothers 'Construction Company. Completion of
this tunnel, reputed to be the longest ever constructed exclusively
from two portal-headings, was delayed by wartime conditions which
hampered construction progress.
