During dry <br />cycles the riverbed below \10re105 Dam Is nor- <br />mally dry. <br />Seflator Wash Reservoir <br /> <br />The Yuma Projects Office orders water Irom <br />Parker Dam, approximately 150 miles <br />upstream from YUma. It takes three days for <br />the water to travel trom Parker Dam <br />downstream to the Yuma area. Many varia- <br />tions in water reqUirements can occur be- <br />tween the time the water is ordered and the <br />time it actually arrives for diversion allm- <br />perial Dam. These fluctuations in water needs <br />can be caused by: <br />po rainfall. which means soils and crops need <br />less irrigation water than originally an- <br />ticipated: <br />~ sudden increa.0j.("8 In temperatures. which <br />means soils and crops become dry faster <br />and need more water; <br /> <br />- <br />, <br /> <br />> sudden dccrea.o;es in <br />temperatures. which means <br />irrigation can be delayed, or <br />> occasional needs by farmers <br />for "extra" water for apply- <br />ing on fields to help prevent <br />crops from Ireezing. <br /> <br />To help stabilize any differen- <br />ces between river flows and ac- <br />tual water needs. regulating <br />reservoirs are used. In the <br />Yuma area an oft-stream <br />regulating reservoir was built <br />near the river in a wash called <br />Senator \\.'ash: both the dam <br />and lis reservoir retain the <br />name Senator WWlh. <br /> <br />If more water arrives in the <br />Yuma area from upstream <br />storage than the amount actual- <br />ly needed by water users. the <br />extra waler is saved by pump- <br />ing it up into Senator Wa..'ih <br />Resen'oir. If less water arrives <br /> <br />Moreros Dam. the last diversIon srrncture on the Colorado River. <br /> <br />from Upstream than the <br />amount actually needed by <br />water users. water is released <br />from Senator \Vash Reservoir. <br />and the dam's reversible pump <br />and generating units produce <br />energy from the falling water. <br /> <br />Senator Wash and the land <br />around it provlde Incidental <br />recreation benefits such as <br />swimming. boating, and fishing. <br />One of Reclamation's SiSler <br />agencies in the U.S. Depart- <br />ment of the Interior. the <br />Bureau of Land .\Ianagement. <br />manages recreation at Senator <br />Wash and maintains camping <br />areas for large numbers of <br />winter visitors as weJl as many <br />local and weekend campers, <br /> <br /> <br />us.
