IV RECREATION DEVELOPNENT PROPOSAL

Recreation developments arc plnnned for Ridgway Reservoir in
accordance with recommendntions jointly made by the National Pnrk
Service, the Colorndo Division of Parks and Outdoor Recreation, the
Bureau of Reclnmation, and a privat"e plnnning consultant. From these
cooperative studies, it was determined that the reservoir area holds
potential for recreational activities such as picnicking, camping,
boating, swimming, water s.kiing, hiking, and sightseeing. The water
quality monito~ing program will determine if body contact activities
should be allowed.

Cooperating agencies estimated that when the reservoir is operating,
and if the recreation facilities proposal is fully implemented, the
annual recreation use at Ridgway Reservoir, exclusive of fishing, would
be 348,000 recreation days.' Two major developments are planned for
the reservoir in light of this estimate. These developments would be
administered by the Colorado Division of Parks and Outdoor Recreation.
All facilities proposed for the area will not be included in the initial
development. Phasing of construction should insure that the facilities
provided are commensurate with the actual visitation which occurs.

The largest recreational development, the Alkali Creek Recreation
Area, would be on a peninsula between the main body of the reservoir
and the Alkali Creek arm. Visitation would be controlled at an entrance
station. A l69-unit campground and a picnic area would be developed.
A boat marina lvould be located at the Alkali site arid would include a
launching ramp, parking areas, a storage yard, courtesy docks, .and
concession facilities. The bay at which the marina would be located
was selected because it also affords good protection from prevailing
southeast summer winds. Electric power, flush toilets, and a pressure
water system would be provided for the facilities at the Alkali Creek
area. A landscape improvement program at the area would include
planting, irrigation, and maintenance of grass, trees, and shrubs
on about 80 acres.

The other development, the Cow Creek Recreation Area, would be
located below the ,bm near the confluence of the Uncompahgre River and
Cow Creek. A lOS-unit campground and a picnic area would be developed.
Hater, electrical power, and chemical recirculating toilets would be
provided, As at the Alkali Creek site, a planting, irrigation, and
maintenance progrnm would be included. Other facilities would include
a pedestrinn bridge across the Uncompahgre River and hiking trails pro-
viding access to the river and stilling basin.

9
