STORAGE RESERVOIR SITES

<C"'~.
,.",.
i~lJ;

Florida Canon Reservoir Sites

f'

The lo~~r, or sedimentary canon of Florida River, 15

)

miles long, extends down to the upper limit of Florida Mesa, At

six places in this canon, narrowed sections occur where somewhat

resistant sandstone beds are crossed by the river, but these sand-

stones were not sufficiently hard to have checked up the very uni-

form river grade through the canon, so that the basins above these

six potential damsites are not particularly favorable for storage.

The average width of the canon in the basin areas is not much

greater than at the slightly narrower damsites. After prelimi-

nary investigation of these sites which disclosed the unfavorable

conditions no more work was done on them.

t!l!l'\
\'~~::':i)
-..._y

Florida Reservoir Site

A reservoir site of fair capacity is located just above

where Miller Creek enters from the left, on the channel of Florida

River. The partial constriction of the valley by the Miller Creek

delta suggests a reservoir basin by no means especially attractive.

The dam in section 8, T. 36 N., R. 7 W" New MexiCO Meridian, would

be very long and expensive. After foundation conditions were found

unfavorable by exploratory drilling which disclosed a great depth

of highly porous gravels, no further work was done at this site.

Lemon Reservoir Site

Located on the channel of Florida River in Section l7i

T. 36 N., R. 7 W., New Mexico Meridian, the damsite for the Lemon

Reservoir is the most desirable one found. It is in the head of

'i

4'
