~

southenstern utah. Intersecting this route at Durango, U. S. highway

550 runs north over Red Mountain Pass to a connection with U. S. high-

way 6 at Montrose, and south to Farmington and Gallup, New Mexico with

connections to all southwestern points. Roads to the south are open

throughout the year but the roads north and east are subject to clos-

ure because of snow for short periods in winter.

Truck and bus service over these roads has grown with road

improvement and now carries most of the incoming and outgoing pas-

senger, mail and express, and a considerable part of the freight as

well. Seven truck lines with more or less regular schedules operate

to Denver, Grand Junction, and Los Angeles, with somewhat more fre-

quent service to Cortez, Gallup, Farmington, DOlores, and Dove Creek.

Benefit to Community

1i~
~~

Business in the various communities on and adjacent to the

area will be increased materially by the development of the project

not only because of the additional volume of produce moving through

the marketing and transportation facilities of the region but because

of the probable immigration of population fram submarginal land, else-

where, to the project. It is estimated that buying power of project

resident s will increase 100 percent. New industries developed in con-

nection with the marketing ot farm products will add further buying

power to the communities. While the local trading centers will bene-

fit considerably, most of the benefit of increased business will accrue

to Durango with same benefit accruing to Denver and other larger cen-

ters.

28
