S~nnging around

through the south to a northwesterly direction San Juan River' con-

tinues into Utah where it turns west to empty in Colorado River

,
some 125 miles west of the common corner of the four states~

Florida River, rising in the Needle Mcuntains, flows

southwesterly down a very narrow granite canon for 15 miles. Even

after passing into sedimentary formations the canon widens but

little during the next 15 miles. As Florida River passes out of

the Cretaceous formation into the softer Tertiary the hills swing

away at about right angles to the ~iver, which continues in a shnl-

low narrow valley nearly 20 miles further to its junction with

Animas River. The project Lands are located on Flc~ida Mesa be-

.~
"~I!;*~
~~~'>:'
tween Florida and Animas rivers below where Florida River leaves
the mountains, and southeast of Durango.
Florida Mesa is the second largest and most compact body
of ar~ble land in Sun Juan Basin as wall as one of the most fertile.
The mesa begins at a point five miles due east of the city of
Durango at an elevation of 7,200 feet. It opens to~~rd the west
to a width of five miles in the same distance s(~th, continues at
this width for eight miles and then in a distance of six miles
closes to a point where Florida and Au,imas Rivers join, It is thus
roughly diamond-shaped with a length of 15 miles and a width of six
miles. Its southern extremity is five miles north of the Colorado-
New Mexico state line. The general slope is slightly toward Animas
River 0n the west ~nd strongly t0ward the s')uth "lith the general
slope of the country,
2
