i71C

'k/ Iud ~,u t/t,s 1JI,ut ct. ?

The Narrows Unit would serve multiple purposes. It would

supply supplemental irrigation water, provide urgently needed

flood control, increase recreational opportunities, enhance fish

and wildlife resources, and improve the downstream water quality.

Should the need arise, some of the conserved water could be

converted from irrigation to municipal and industrial use. It

might also be possible to provide some s~pplemental irrigation

water for upstream lands through exchange procedures although no

specific plans for such exchanges have been formulated.

Storage water would be released as necessary from the

reservoir to supplement the irrigation supplies within the 166,370-
acre irrigated service area of the Lower South Platte Water

Conservancy District. This supplemental irrigation water, estimated

to average 119,~OO acre-feet annually, would have a very favorable

impact on the overall economy of the area.

A water budget is attached which shows the average annual

historical water supply (for the representative period 1947-1961)
without the Narrows Reservoir and the supply anticipated with the

Narrows Reservoir in operation. The Bureau of Reclamation estimates

that irrigation benefits from the supplemental water would average

$1,631,500 annually.

3
