Roy Romer signed an executive or- der creating the 30:member Ar- kansas River Coordinating Com- mittee to provide advice on a wide range of water needs in the Arkansas River basin. Rush- El Paso County Commissioner "The possibility that Colo- rado might have to pay Kansas for past depletions and curb fu- ture use of water in the basin has added some urgency to re- solving other water issues along the Arkansas River," Romer said. "We are going to 'have ro make some tough deci- sions, and I Want to make sure that all the stakeholders are working together to make sure that those decisions are good ones." The Arkansas River Coordi- nating Committee brings to- gether representatives of wa- ter conservancy districts, ditch companies, ground water us- ers, counties. municipal water utility agencies and other stake- holders in the Arkansas River Basin. The committee will be cochaired by State Engineer Hal Simpson and Water Conserva- tion Board Director Chuck Lile. James S. Lochhead. Executive Director of the Department of Natural Resources, Perry Olson. Director of the Division of Wild- life, and Laurie Mathews, Di- rector of State Parks, will serve as ex-officio members. The state has been actively working with water users and others on a number of issues in the basin. Two years ago. the state began the Fort Lyon Ca- nal Study to help communities in Southeastern Colorado find ways to survive under mount~ iug economic pressures on farmers to sell their water rights to Fronr Range munici- palities.
