Roy <br />Romer signed an executive or- <br />der creating the 30:member Ar- <br />kansas River Coordinating Com- <br />mittee to provide advice on a <br />wide range of water needs in <br />the Arkansas River basin. The <br />Governor also announced that <br />the following individuals have <br />been designated by member or- <br />ganizations to serve on the <br />committee: <br />Ralph Adkins, Pueblo South- <br />eastern Colorado Water Conser- <br />vancy. Rush- <br />El Paso County Commissioner <br />"The possibility that Colo- <br />rado might have to pay Kansas <br />for past depletions and curb fu- <br />ture use of water in the basin <br />has added some urgency to re- <br />solving other water issues <br />along the Arkansas River," <br />Romer said. "We are going to <br />'have ro make some tough deci- <br />sions, and I Want to make sure <br />that all the stakeholders are <br />working together to make sure <br />that those decisions are good <br />ones." <br />The Arkansas River Coordi- <br />nating Committee brings to- <br />gether representatives of wa- <br />ter conservancy districts, ditch <br />companies, ground water us- <br />ers, counties. municipal water <br />utility agencies and other stake- <br />holders in the Arkansas River <br />Basin. The committee will be <br />cochaired by State Engineer Hal <br />Simpson and Water Conserva- <br />tion Board Director Chuck Lile. <br />James S. Lochhead. Executive <br />Director of the Department of <br />Natural Resources, Perry Olson. <br />Director of the Division of Wild- <br />life, and Laurie Mathews, Di- <br />rector of State Parks, will serve <br />as ex-officio members. <br />The state has been actively <br />working with water users and <br />others on a number of issues in <br />the basin. Two years ago. the <br />state began the Fort Lyon Ca- <br />nal Study to help communities <br />in Southeastern Colorado find <br />ways to survive under mount~ <br />iug economic pressures on <br />farmers to sell their water <br />rights to Fronr Range munici- <br />palities.
