drainage basin. The Town of Evergreen, located near the geometric center

of the drainage basin at an elevation of 6997 feet, has a mean annual tem-

perature and precipitation of 440F and 17.7 inches respectively. The limited

precipitation at the lower elevations in the basin requires that the principal

crops of native hay, alfalfa, and pastureland be irrigated. The commercial

farming of row crops is almost nonexistent.

.

The mean annual runoff (1927-72) from Bear Creek as measured at ,;

the mouth at Sheridan is 26,440 Ac-Ft. The mean of the annual reported

diversions (1952-72) is 21,156 Ac-Ft. There are numerous, small off-stream

storage reservoirs in former Water District No.9 and one on-stream reservoir

at Evergreen. The Evergreen Reservoir is used for recreation and normally

does not serve as a water storage facility. Bear Creek Dam is presently

under construction on Bear Creel: immediately downstream from the Turkey

Creek confluence. This dam is scheduled for completion in late 1976 and

will be used for flood control purposes with a maximum capacity of 52,000

Ac-Ft. There are no transmountain diversions into former Water District No.

.

9 with the exception of an underground aqueduct that delivers Denver water

from the South Platte River to Marston Reservoir.

Population growth in former Water District No.9 has been relatively

rapid in recent years (45% growth rate between 1960 and 1970) as a result of

the westward expansion of the Denver metropolitan area and the development

of numerous subdivisions in the mountains. The open space and agricultural

land east of, the hogback are being developed into golf courses, shopping

centers, parks and homes. Water usage is changing from agricultural to

-3-

--

-,---.,

.' ....,....~.-

-";......' L_

-'."_.
