SURFACE WATER SUPPLY

Former Water District No.9 comprises a 261 square mile area

and has a mean annual water yield of 45,665 ac-ft (1950-72) or 3.3 inches

of surface runoffl. Estimated mean annual precipitation for the district is

18 inches. Late spring and early summer snowmelt is a significant contri-

butor to runoff as 30 to 40% of the annual discharge measured at Morrison

occurs in the months of May and June. One-third of the land area in the

Bear Creek drainage bas in is above 9,000 feet elevation and almost two-

thirds of the area is above 7,000 feet.

Gaqinq Stations

There are presently two stream gaging stations in operation in

former Water District No.9. One station is located 1.3 miles upstream from

the mouth of Bear Creek and is referred to in water resources data publica-

tions as "Bear Creek at Mouth at Sheridan, Colorado". This station has

a contributing drainage area of 260 square miles and a period of record of

April to November 1914 and March 1927 to current year. Altitude of the gage

is 5,295 feet. Extremes for the period of record are:

Maximum Discharge - 8150 cfs (May 7, 1969)
Minimum Discharge - No flow (July 13, 1954)

The average discharge for 45 years of record (1927-72) is 36.5 cfs or 26,440

ac-ft per year. There are approximately 9,000 irrigated acres above the

station.

1 Mean of the annual Bear Creek discharge at mouth at Sheridan plus the
consumptive use of all diversions.

-20-

~'.
