west. This trend is well illustrated by referring to Jefferson County census

figutes which show that the county population has increased from 127,520

in 1960 to 233,031 in 1970, an average annual growth rate of 6.3%. Further,

it is estimated by the Jefferson County Commissioners that the City of

Lakewood will have a population of 170,000 by 1980 as compared to its

1970 population of 92,743.

Region II, the area west of the hogback, consists of small moun-

taln communities, subdivided land tracts with single family dwellings (I to

5 acre lot size), and numerous mountain homes. There is a small amount

of ranching In this region which results in approxImately 1000 acres of alfalfa

and native hay being irrigated from surface diversions. Arapahoe National

Forest located in the western part of Region II is covered with coniferous forest

and receives heavy recreational use from the Denver metropolitan population.

Domestic water for the homes in Region II is supplied by surface

water diversions and wells. The Evergreen-Hiwan Hills-Kittredge area

has a centralized, metered water system owned by the Public Service Company

of Colorado. Water is supplied to the system by meanS of a surface diversion

~rom Bear Creek. The Town of Morrison also has a centralized water system

that takes its water from Bear Creek. Other communities In Region II depend

on small municipal and individual wells for domestic water with some homes

receiving their water via truck. Mountain homes in the area for the most part

receive their water from individual we lls. Limited groundwater supplies have

restricted growth in some areas such as Indian Hills. Groundwater contami-

nation from the large number of individual septic waste disposal systems is

becoming a problem in several areas.

-7-

~':'CI:...J.....:....

r. ~~,: - ..;...... .
