(l') .-4 r- ~ ,~ ,-- c Bureau of ReClamat. ~=.- - /ff; -- -- - -~n"uO WArr("-........"...". rIIIIIIII/A",,""""'" JNSERVATlON .... qn.a e", 11IIIIIIII 11IIIIIIII News Release Upper Colorado Region Grand Junction Projects Office Grand Junction CO Richard Long (303) 248-0645 For Immediate Release BUREAU OF RECLAMATION SCHEDULES PUBLIC MEETING ON PROPOSED DESALINATION/POWER GENERATION FACILITY The Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation) and the partnership of Oasis Energy / Company and Crystal Energy Company (the Sponsors) have scheduled a public meeting on a study that could lead to the development of a privately financed, owned, and operated desalination/power generation facility in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. The meeting will be Thursday, November 2 at 7:00 p.m. at the Holiday Inn in Glenwood Springs. At the meeting, the Sponsors will ~ describe the project and Reclamation will elicit from the public, significant concerns and issues to be addressed in an Environmental Assessment which Reclamation is preparing on the proposed facility. The proposed project, consisting of a power generation facility fueled by ~ natural gas, a saline spring collection system, brine desalination plant, and a salt-disposal facility, would be constructed adjacent to 1-70 at Devereux Road. The facility would collect and remove up to 70,000 tons of salt per year from saline springs in the Glenwood Springs area which are contributing approximately 174,000 tons of salt annually to the Colorado River. The project's power generation facility would produce and sell about 25 MW of power to Public Service Company of Colorado under an existing power purchase contract. Saline spring water would be collected from springs along the Colorado River. Waste heat from power generation would drive a closed evaporative desalination system to remove the salt. The removed salt would be marketed by the Sponsors. The distilled water produced by desalination would be returned to the Colorado River. A cooperative agreement was signed on October 23, marking the beginning of a joint venture between Reclamation and the Sponsors to lower salinity levels in the river as a part of the Colorado River Water Quality Improvement Program.
