",--" -- tr ~.
~j';;';0

.

CHAPTER V

MITIGATING MEASURES AND AIR AND WATER QUALITY ASPECTS

A. General Mitigation Measures

1. Cultural Resources

No mitigation measures will be necessary as no known significant
cultural resource sites will be disturbed. If such resources are
encountered during construction, work will be halted until the
Lower Missouri Region Archeologist can have the situation assessed.

2. Revegetation of Disturbed Areas

.

Designated areas not occupied by structures which have heen scarred,
cleared or stripped of vegetation will be revegetated. These ~reas
include, but are not limited to, cut and fill slopes of highways
and roads; areas used for construction camps; surface area nf huried
conduits, and obliterated construction roads. Generally, topsoil
that has been stripped and stockpiled during excavation for
construction is spread evenly over the areas to be revegetated.
The areas are fertilized and planted with native and/or adapted
grasses and shrubs. Irrigation may be needed for a one- or two-
year period to assure successful revegetation. Various ~ethods of
seeding are utilized depending on the characteristics of the area
to be revegetated. Hydroseeding with a hydromulch containing seed,
fertilizer, water, and wood fiber is often used to plant cut nr
fill slopes. Hand seeding and drilling are other Methods "sed for
seeding disturbed areas. Aspen mats, straw and wood fiber have
heen-use~~prevent-wind-and-wafer erosion and retain Moisture
while vegetation is being established.

3. Public Safety

The safety of the public will be considered in the design and
construction of the Fountain Valley Conduit. The conduit will
be buried. The pumping plants will be enclosed and switchyards
will be fenced. The tops of the surge, regulating, and storage
tanks will be enclosed and accessible only to project personnel.

.

V-I
