Status of Salinity Control Activities
Bureau of Reclamation

~ Salinity control projects in which both the Bureau of
CJ1
....... Reclamation and U.S. Department of Agriculture are involved
l-"

and are in the implementation phase are described under this
heading.
Progress during the reporting period on the salinity
projects authorized by Title II of P.L. 93-320 and P.L. 98-

569, and other measures that reduce salinity in the lower

mainstem of the Colorado River, are presented in the

paragraphs that follow.

A complete description of the

projects can be found in the "1987 Review - Water Quality
Standards for Salinity - Colorado River System," August 1987.

Location of the proposed salinity control measures are shown

on Figure 2.

Paradox Valley Unit (Reclamation) - In the late spring
of 1988, Injection Test Well No.1, Paradox Valley was

completed to a depth of about 16,000 feet.

Preliminary

testing indicates an acceptable injection zone exists. The

corrosion resistant alloy injection tubing has been
manufactured, threaded and installed. A four-mile long brine

pipeline, connecting the brine collection well field to the

injection well has been completed, and the necessary surface

facilities at the injection well site are under construction.

When the connection of the the surface facilities to the

injection well are completed, a two year test period is

-7-
