The Amity Mutual Irrigation Company

Ii
!

,

1531
Superinlendenl's Report
To
The Amity Mutual Irrigation Company

TO THE DIRECTORS AND STOCKHOLDERS;

Gentlemen:

The following statements covering the operation and maintenance
of The Amity Mutual Irrigation Company, its canals and reservoir system,
are submitted for your consideration.

AMITY CANAL

1966 was an excellent water year for Al11.ity Stockholders. There was
a record supply oC irrigation water available from John Martin Reservoir.
In addition, The Great Plains Reservoirs supplied water during critical
periods of demand. Winter irrigation was also possible for the first
tim~ in ma~ years, since excess water was released from John Martin
Reservoir during the winter of. 1965-66. 133,198 acre feet were diverted
from the Arkansas River and 7,515 acre feet from Nee No She Reservoir
for a total diversion of 140,713 acre feet. Of thi!; amount 103,418 acre
jeet_were dP.1iVP,TPd to lateral JZates, for an average deUvery (J. :L...,~am
feet per share.

Water was diverted continuously from November 1, 1965 through
Jan. 7, 1966, when ice conditions and lack of. demand forced the ces&ation
at diversions. Spring delivery was started on April 5, 1966. when 300cfs.
was released from John Martin Reservoir for Amity use. Water was
available from this source all during the irrigation season, with diversions
f\uctua~ Y<ith demand.

,
,
\
l

I

The Amity experienCed very little damage from heavy rains this
year. On June 18, a 3 to 4 inch rain and severe hail north of Holly caused
the canal bank to be over topped in several places. This damage, however,
was not serious and was quickly repaired with Company equipment. On
October 15, a high wind filled the canal with weeds from Bristol to the
State Line. It took nearly 2 weeks with two dJ;aglines to put the canal back
in operation. From November 1 to November 15 water was released from
Nee No She Reservoir to complete the irrigation season.

The Company purchaSed a 3/4 yard dragline this year which was
put to use on the Lamar Division in November. A tremendous amount
of material has been excavated from the canal and deposited on the
berm or roadway side. This operation is putting the canal back to its
original dimensions and, at the same time, strengthening the lower bank.
A part or this work includes the removal of many hundreds of tree s in
this area.

Page 17
