.- ,...: " '1 1-", ... .1.. 6 .\IETROPOLIT.-\N WATER DISTRICT CHRONOLOGY OF THE COLORADO RIVER AQUEDUCT 1923 Preliminllry studies of Colorv.do River as a source of addi- tional water supply begun by City of Los Angeles. 1924 Colorado River Aqueduct Association organized at Pasa- dena, California. 1925 City of Los Angeles issued $2,000,000 Colorado River project bonds for preliminary surveys and investigations. 1927 Metropolitan Water District Act enacted by California Leg- islature permitting noncontiguous cities and districts to cooperate in acquisition of domestic water supplies. 1928 The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California organized with eleven member cities. 1930 District took over all engineering and other work and records from the Bureau of Water Works and Suppl~' of the City of Los Angeles and paid in full all preliminary expenses of the city. District contracted with the United States for storage of water and for 36 per cent of the power generated at Boulder Dam. Hl31 Four cities joined the District and two withdrew. A construction bond issue of $220,000,000 was approved by District electors in September. 1932 December_ First block of construction bonds sold to Re- construction Finance Corporation. Construction work started in the last week of the year. 1941 First delivery of softened water made June 17 to Pasadena. Initial stage of Colorado River aqueduct construction com- pleted July 31. Colorado River aqueduct changed from a construction to an operation and maintenance basis August 1. A vaiIability of Colorado River water for any demand guar- anteed security from water shortage to every constituent area of the Metropolitan Water District. Emergency guarding of aqueduct features instituted im- mediately after Pearl Harbor, December 7. I ,. I
