<br />.- ,...: " '1 <br />1-", ... .1.. <br /> <br />6 <br /> <br />.\IETROPOLIT.-\N WATER DISTRICT <br /> <br />CHRONOLOGY OF THE <br />COLORADO RIVER AQUEDUCT <br /> <br />1923 Preliminllry studies of Colorv.do River as a source of addi- <br />tional water supply begun by City of Los Angeles. <br /> <br />1924 Colorado River Aqueduct Association organized at Pasa- <br />dena, California. <br /> <br />1925 City of Los Angeles issued $2,000,000 Colorado River project <br />bonds for preliminary surveys and investigations. <br /> <br />1927 Metropolitan Water District Act enacted by California Leg- <br />islature permitting noncontiguous cities and districts to <br />cooperate in acquisition of domestic water supplies. <br /> <br />1928 The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California <br />organized with eleven member cities. <br /> <br />1930 District took over all engineering and other work and <br />records from the Bureau of Water Works and Suppl~' of <br />the City of Los Angeles and paid in full all preliminary <br />expenses of the city. <br /> <br />District contracted with the United States for storage of <br />water and for 36 per cent of the power generated at <br />Boulder Dam. <br /> <br />Hl31 Four cities joined the District and two withdrew. <br /> <br />A construction bond issue of $220,000,000 was approved by <br />District electors in September. <br /> <br />1932 December_ First block of construction bonds sold to Re- <br />construction Finance Corporation. Construction work <br />started in the last week of the year. <br /> <br />1941 First delivery of softened water made June 17 to Pasadena. <br /> <br />Initial stage of Colorado River aqueduct construction com- <br />pleted July 31. Colorado River aqueduct changed from a <br />construction to an operation and maintenance basis August 1. <br /> <br />A vaiIability of Colorado River water for any demand guar- <br />anteed security from water shortage to every constituent <br />area of the Metropolitan Water District. <br /> <br />Emergency guarding of aqueduct features instituted im- <br />mediately after Pearl Harbor, December 7. <br /> <br />I <br />,. <br />I <br />
