The areas shown are offici,,1 figures as of June
30, 1945 from the records of the county surveyors.
The coastal basin experienced an increase in population dur-
ing the past liscal year. The expectation of victory in the Eun)-
pean theatre of war maintained the tempo of war production
and of other actiyities connected with the Pacific theatre of
operations. Airplanes, ships. and other war material were pro-
duced in great volume up to the end of the fiscal year despite
war contr"ct cutbacks annoullced in the last quarter, and reported
decline in number of wage earners. The estimated 1945 population is compiled from
data issued by the U. S. Bureau of Census. from reports of city
clerks of the Orange County areas and from ligures published
in April 1945 by the Los Angeles County Regional Planning
Commission. The constituent areas of the Metropolitan Water
District show a gain in population of 45,000 and the coastal
bRsin as a whole "" increase of 100,000 over the 1944 estimate.
The assessed yaluation figures cover all real and personal
property alld the property of utilities subject to District taxes
on the lirst Monday in March 1945. The basis of assessment
is approximatel..' '_ 0 per cent of the fair market valuation.
