These
thunderstorms usually caused by orographic lifting, reach their maximum
intensity in mid or late afternoon and are often accompanied by very intense
local showers.

5. Precipitation. - The Purgatoire River basin above Trinidad is in

a semiarid. region but the orogr!lphic effects within and ?-djacent to the

basin produce a marked precipitation differential between specific locations.

The average annual precipitation for the basin is 17.74 inches, varying

from 16.83 inches at Trinidad to 22.25 inches at North Lake. The maximum

recorded annual precipitation in the basin was 34.48 inches at Trinidad in

1878, but precipitation ordinarily increases with altitude in the mountain

area and it is probable that greater precipitation has occu~red in the

higher mountain regions than has been recorded at the established weather

stations. The greatest precipitation occurs during the spring and summer

months, April - August, averaging about 61 percent of the total at Trinidad

and 59 percent at North Lake. The average precipitation in the fall and

winter months, September - March, varies from 6.57 inches at Trinidad to

9.20 inches at North Lake. Nost of the fall and winter precipitation at

North Lake and above Trinidad occurs as snow which does not produce appreciable

runoff until the spring months. Precipitation data for stations in and

adjacent to the watershed are shown in table 1 and the station locations

are shown on plate 1. The average annual precipitation isohyets are also

shown on plate 1. Data relative to the maximu.'1l 24 hour precipitation recorded

at selected stations are shown in table 2.

3

IIF.PBNDIX B
