Stream fL9w characteristics. - The Purgatoire River rises in <br /> <br />the Culebra Range of the Rocky Mountains where some peaks exceed 14,000 <br /> <br />feet in elevation. The relief on the northern drainage divide descends <br /> <br />to about 7,500 feet in the vicinity of Ludlow, Colorado; and on the <br /> <br />southern drainage divide to about 8,000 feet in the vicinity of the head- <br /> <br />waters of Lorencito and Long Canyons, and 9,500 feet on .Raton Mesa in the <br /> <br />headwaters of Raton Canyon. The elevation at Trinidad is about 6,000 <br /> <br />feet. <br /> <br />12. The Purgatoire River flows from the confluence of North and <br /> <br />Niddle Forks, which forms the main stem at mile 186, through the <br /> <br />mountainous section to Trinidad. In the reach from Trinidad to the <br /> <br />mouth of San Francisco Creek, the stream runs through an alluvial <br /> <br />valley. The valley in the mountainous section is narrow, varying in <br /> <br />width from a. few hundred fee-to to about. one -fourth mil Po.
