The Rio Grande National Forest portion of the WSA
includes 660 acres of private lands within the
boundary. See Figure 12. These private lands
include 130 acres on the west side of Mount Blanca
including the old abandoned townsite of Como.
Future development of this land may be expected.
Other lands include a 160 acre tract located in Sand
Creek, The owner has requested a permit for an
access road to this patented land. It appears that
access from the western side of the range would be
infeasible and that the most feasible access might
be from the eastern side across Music Pass, The
remainder of the patented lands generally occur as
scattered mining claims.

Several rights-of-way are needed to provide access
to National Forest lands in the WSA on both the west
and east sides. Also, rights-of-way are needed at
several points where the Rainbow Trail crosses
private land without a public right-of-way. In
other places, the trail needs to be relocated to
avoid private land, If motorized Use of the trail
is to be continued, a modification of the Wilderness
Study Area boundary will be necessary to allow room
for relocation of the trail. At least one landowner
has indicated an unwillingness to grant a
right-of-way across private land and has requested
that the trail be relocated.

The Bureau
essentially
claims.

of Land Management Black Canyon WSA is
bisected by three patented mining

15. Transportation

The Sangre de Cristo WSA is generally accessible
from Highway 50 on the northeast side, from Highway
69 between the Arkansas River and Walsenburg on the
eastern side, and from Highway 17 between Salida and
Alamosa on the western side. Major access points on
the eastern slope are at the Hayden Creek Road, Lake
Creek Campground, Hermit Lake Road, Alvarado
Campgound, Medano Pass Road, and Mosca Pass Road.

68

~- r'
I I!
