National Wilderness Preservation System, as determined
in the Final Environmental Impact Statement for the Pike
and San Isabel National Forest Land Management Plan.

This recommendation will receive further review and
possible modification in the offices of the Chief of the
Forest Service, the Secretary of Agriculture, and the
President of the United States. The President will
transmit the Administration's final recommendation to
Congress. Final decisions on wilderness designation have
been reserved by Congress.

This study is being made through the initial Forest land
and resource management planning process required for
National Forest lands by the Forest and Rangeland
Renewable Resources Planning Act of 1974 as amended by
the National Forest Management Act of 1976.

The Bureau of Land Management lands are included as part
of the study because their suitability or unsuitability
is contingent, in part, upon the suitability or
unsuitability of the contiguous National Forest lands.

C. Vicinity

The Sangre de Cristo WSA lies along the Sangre de Cristo
Mountain Range which divides the San Luis Valley and the
Rio Grande River drainage from the Wet Mountain Valley
and the Arkansas River drainage. This long, relatively
narrow area extends from Simmons Peak, approximately 10
miles south of Salida, Colorado, to Mount Blanca, which
is approximately 40 miles west of Walsenberg, Colorado.
The total length of this area is approximately 70 miles
while the width varies from 2 to 10 miles. The length of
the WSA is interrupted by the Hayden Pass Road and the
Medano Pass Road which divide the WSA into three separate
portions. The Bureau of Land Management WSAs are
contiguous to the San Luis Valley slope of the National
Forest WSA. The central portion of the area is
approximately 120 airline miles southwest of Denver,
Colorado. The WSA is located in Fremont, Custer,
Huerfano, Alamosa, and Saguache Counties. See Vicinity
Map, Figure 1 and Wilderness Study Area Map, Figure 2.
Bureau of Land Management Study Areas are shown in the
Appendix.

2

'-1(1)OC1O
L ~.J """ .a..
