~',

topographically isolated tracts south of Medano Pass on
the eastern side of the National Forest WSA will be
difficult to manage as wilderness due to their small
size, isolation, and proximity to lands with detracting
uses and activities. Also, portions of the WSA will be
difficult to manage as wilderness because they project
from the main body of the area or are isolated by private
inholdings. The manageability could be improved with the
modified boundary alternative as these unmanageable areas
can be eliminated from the sui table portion. No new
conflicts will be created with the nonwilderness
alternatives.

"
1

,
~;

,

Conclusion: Based upon the considerations outlined above
and discussed in detail in Section IV, the area was
determined to be capable of wilderness designation with
modification of the western and eastern boundaries to
eliminate manageability problems.

Is the area available for wilderness?

To add res s
wilderness
Significant

this criterion, the values
and as nonwilderness
findings are shown below.

of the area as
were compared.

Mineral potential was considered. Past activity and
estimated potential indicates that the area has potential
to produce mineral resources.

---..

Wilderness designation, with either the suitable or
suitable with modified boundary alternative would
withdraw the included area from mineral entry and leasing
after December 31, 1983, and permit the exercise of
existing rights, subject to stipulations which would not
prohibi t but would have an effect on utilization of the
resources. The exercise of these rights could result in
activities not compatible with maintenance of the
wilderness environment. The effect of a nonwilderness
designation would result in the mineral resources being
managed in accordance with applicable laws and
regulations the same as on other National Forest lands.

26

(<;2G34
