<br />the only other flood control structur8 on the main stream in the
<br />State of Colorado. John Martin is owned and regulated by the
<br />Corpa of Engineers. The total drainage area above John Martin
<br />is 18,915 square miles. See Section II of the Master Regulation
<br />Manual for more detailed information,

<br />b. Tributaries of the Arbmsas River. Trinidad Dam and P.eservoir is
<br />owned and operated by the Corps of Engineers. Pinon Canyon Dam, located
<br />in Pinon Canyon, a tributary of the Purgatorie River, controls about 1 square
<br />mile. Project operation is automatic since there are no gates on the conduit
<br />or spillway. Project maintenance is performed by city of Trinidad personnel.

<br />a. Population. The population of Colorado counties
<br />in which the Arkansas River Basin above John Martin Dam is
<br />located is ahown in Table 4-9. Thare are 22 urban areas, incor-
<br />porated and unincorporatad, having more than l,nOO population in
<br />the l3-coWlty area. Towns and cities having more than 5,000
<br />population in 1960 are ahown in Table 4-10.

<br />b. Agriculture. Agricultural pursuits in the area
<br />are oriented toward onions, alfalfa, sugar beets, watermelons,
<br />corn, sorghums, assorted vegetables, tomatoes, potatoes, wheat,
<br />small grains, beans, hay, and wi th mos t of the efforts directed
<br />toward livestock. Table 4-ll showa the agriculture production and
<br />value within the standard project flood plain.
